5BD - Day 1

I had a good morning, I made some coffee around 10 am. I'm not really sure how my coffee fits in with this plan, but I tried to hold off so as not to "break my fast" too soon before lunch. It did have some fat free half and half and I'm thinking I'm going to have to give that up.
Lunch was:
5 bites hot dog with ketchup (no buns)
Dinner was:
5 bites of teriyaki pork tenderloin, kale, and white rice (mixed together)

I drank lots of iced tea (unsweetened) and water!

I also had a lot of adrenaline today because of my excitement and do I did done squats and leg raises...nothing too involved though.

Hubs wanted to watch kitchen nightmares and Hell's Kitchen on TV and it nearly killed me! But I hung in there.

Side effects:
Headache

The year of procrastination and the 5BD

     I am ashamed to admit that I will be turning 31 in September and am at my heaviest weight ever. I've noticed that the worse I feel about my weight...the more weight I end up putting on. Emotional eating anyone?!
     So I have decided with my all or nothing attitude when it comes to dieting I need to teach myself some SERIOUS self control.
     This brings me to the 5 bite diet. Fad diet? Yes. Long term solution? No. Does it teach enormous self control, conscientious eating, and portion control (*one of my main maladaptive eating behaviors)? Absolutely!

Here are the basics

* Skip Breakfast
* Eat 5 bites of anything for Lunch
* Eat 5 bites of anything for Dinner
* Make 1 bite per day a protein
* No snacking
* Unlimited zero calorie beverages
* Take one multivitamin daily

     Sounds a little crazy, but biologically the fat stored in our bodies is meant to supply us with nutrition in times of famine...herein lies the problem, many of us never use up our fat reserves and instead continue to stuff ourselves past the point of comfort adding to the already ample reserve.

     In effect - this is mental gastric bypass. It works on the same principle as weight loss surgery without undergoing major surgical alteration to our bodies. It also is an option for those of us who wish to lose weight but do not qualify for weight loss surgery because of the minimum 100lbs. overweight requirements.

     Within the first three days, your body will naturally resize to accommodate the smaller amount of food and begin to regularly pull nutrients and fat from the reserves in our body. This is a fast weight loss solution and one that you can slowly adapt for maintenance purposes. Once the goal weight is achieved, you simply begin adding a bite of food at each meal until your weight stabilizes. At this point you are taking in enough calories and nutrients to maintain the health of your body without adding unnecessarily to your bodies fat reserve again.

     The biggest problem I see with this diet is the emphasis I eating 5 bites of WHATEVER you want. In fact, many people are calling this the snickers bar diet because they can eat a snickers bar (5 bites on average per bar) and still lose weight. Now, this is ridiculous! Obviously you want your bites to count nutritionally, but knowing that I can still have a bite of dessert or candy and still successfully lose weight definitely takes away a lot of the guilt in enjoying my favorite foods regardless of their nutritional status.

     I have to say that I am really liking the concept of this diet and I'm excited to see what my results will be.

I'll let you all know how my first day went tomorrow 😉

30 before 30 Challenge - Why?

      I am realizing that the older I get the harder it is to lose weight and get in shape. However, it is becoming increasingly easier to put weight on! Literally, I sniff a donut and gain an inch around my waist. I have been told and have read that yes this is a biological response to our hunter gatherer days when women needed more fat cells to survive. Well someone needs to tell my body we are in the 21st century in America, I'm not in danger of starving to death anytime soon.
     I have an old college friend who made a list of 30 things she would like to do before she turns 30. That idea inspired me to also do a 30 before 30 plan for this next year. In my case though, I will be working to lose 30 pounds before the big 3-0 birthday next September (2013).
     There are several reasons that I am completing this challenge. My family history of illness and heart related problems is staggering. Here is a list of problems from my family history:

*Joint pain
*Arthritis
*Asthma
*Allergies
*Migraines
*High Cholesterol
*Depression
*Anxiety
High Blood Pressure
Blood Disorders (related to clotting)
Hair loss (men and women)
*Mitro Valve Prolapse
*Heart Murmur
Heart attack
Cancer
Underactive Thyroid
*Poor Vision
*Dry Skin

     I have placed an * next to the items I have already noticed in myself and I'm only 29!
This is no longer just a cosmetic goal, like weight loss has been for me in the past, but it is an investment I am making in my future. If I don't get to a healthy weight before I turn 30, I am setting myself up for battling with my health as most of the above conditions are worsened with obesity and weight gain.

IT IS MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2012, AND TODAY STARTS MY 30 BEFORE 30 CHALLENGE!
